Any historical visits should also include the cities of Agde (Agatha the beautiful, founded by Greek merchants), Narbonne (founded by jealous Roman traders to compete with the Greek), the Canal du Midi (see in Béziers the 7 locks of Fontsérane), the scenic Roman oppidum of Ensérune, and of course the star point of interest: the City or Carcassonne. All can be reached within 1,5 hour drive. Should the temperature be too high, then we recommend exploring the “Plateau”, starting with La Salvetat, and the lakes and small villages offering a green and fresh experience different from the Mediterranean heat. Ask us for good tips and suggestions, consult the manuals, books and maps available on location, and enjoy discovering your own “spots” at every turn of the road, from magnificent castle remains to the most humble roman chapels.
In the spring, Roquebrun stages the “Fête des Mimosas” in February, followed in May/June by the “Fête de la Rose” in Vieussan … The traditional summer entertainment includes bull fighting in Béziers, “joutes nautiques” in Agde and Sète, and a lot more fun like historical/medieval reconstitutions along Canal du Midi or in the famous walled city of Carcassonne (see history). There are also many concerts in local churches and chapels as well as numerous “Fêtes de village” on top of the “Bastille day” fireworks on July 14th. In autumn, enjoy the magnificent changing colours of the vineyards, the mushrooms and game season, timely backed up by the many “Vin Nouveau” celebrations and “Fêtes de la châtaigne et du marron”. |
