The Haut Languedoc Regional Nature Parc comprises a combination of very different terrains and climates, which enables the preservation af rare flora and fauna and what is special for the area are the garrigue, which covers the limestone plateaus, and the maquis, which, like the garrigue is invasive formation of vegetation that appears after the dissapearance of forestry... The garrigue grows in chalky soil and maquis grows in schistose soil and they are both widely represented in the area. The species growing on chalky soil includes the Kermes Oak, which is a typical mediterranean tree, the Truffle Oak, provider of the "black gold" (truffle), the immortal Common Cypres, the Laurel tree, Olive tree, Aleppo Pine, Lavender, Holm Oak, Rosemary, which is the moste characteristic shrub in the south of France. Thyme, Hackleberry, Caper bush, Eucalyptus, Broom and Fig tree which can be found just about everywhere in the area due to its resistance to both cold and drought. It does not need to be attented to and the fruits are tasty ans easy to preserve.
The species growing on schistose soil are mainly : Mimosa, Arbutus (Strawberry tree), Mastic tree, White heath, Chesnut tree, Cistus and Prickly Juniper. The natural heritage comprises everything from pine forests and bushes to valleys, gorges, wide coombs and every season has its different beautiful colours and lovely fragrances. There are about 25 different species of birds and the natural parc is a perfect landscape for observing the various birds and other animals. Other than the birds one can find moufflon sheeps, green lezards and weasels, some species, such a Bonelli"s eagle, the other, the genet and many bats, the Montpellier grass snake and plants such as golden galic, orchids and drosera, are protected here.
The Haut Languedoc lies in between two climates, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean which is at an altitude of somewhere between 700 and 1 000 metres and which provides the area with its multitude of landscape, forest, heather-covered moors, fishing rivers and lakes designed for all tyes of water-based activities. The climate of the Haut-Languedoc can be as various as the landscape. Affected by the mediterranean heat, the winters are mild and the sun shines approximately 3000 hours every year. The sea wind carries either mildness for the Mediterranean or rain from the Narbonnais and the autumn can be rather stormy and violent.
